2010 Herschell L. Hamilton
Golf Classic
IN SUPPORT OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR
BIRMINGHAM STUDENTS
Dr. Herschell Hamilton graduated from Florida
A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1949
and received his Medical Degree in 1954 from Meharry Medical
College in Nashville. His training would prepare him for an
integral role in the Civil Rights Movement.
Dr. Hamilton came to Birmingham in 1958 as
the first African American Board Certified General Surgeon.
He provided free medical services to sick and
injured civil rights activists during the 1960s. As a
result, he was affectionately nicknamed the "Battle Surgeon"
or "Dog Bite Doctor."
He practiced medicine for over 40 years and received many
accolades, including the 2002 Distinguished Alumni Award
from the Birmingham Metro Chapter of the FAMU National
Alumni Association. Dr. Hamilton passed away in 2003,
leaving a remarkable legacy and lasting impression on the
Birmingham Metro Chapter.
Proceeds from this tournament will help
establish a memorial scholarship in his honor. The fund will
further the goals of the alumni chapter, which awards annual
scholarships to Birmingham area college students
matriculating at Florida A&M University.
